Orange Telkom Kenya has the lowest data bundle prices in the country compared to other service providers. However their major limitation is browsing speed currently on 2G technology using GSM and Telkom 3G plus CDMA which is very unpopular especially on handsets. Most mobile phone service providers use GSM network as opposed to CDMA. Subscribers on Orange Telkom network can access the internet for as little as Ksh. 150 per month.

Since Orange Telkom’s migration from EVDO to 1X platform, it has significantly reduced its data bundle pricing in an effort to penetrate deeper into the data services market. The new platform 1X will enable Orange Telkom subscribers enjoy improved and reliable internet connectivity on their handsets.

Orange Telkom’s modems use 3G plus platform operating on CDMA technology while handsets use GSM platform running on 2G network with an upgrade to 3G expected within the year. The new data bundle prices apply on both pre paid and post paid customers. Previously 50MB of data was Ksh.150 and now with Kshs. 150, you will receive100MB. To get 500MB of data you had to spend Ksh. 850, and now for the same value, you get 1000MB instead.

Orange is expected to further lower its bundle prices upon migration to 3G network if it intents to stay in business; Airtel has already launched 3G network in most parts of Nairobi and their charges are comparatively cheaper. Safaricom will be hard hit given its diminishing dominance due to competition in the voice sector; its major source of income is data.
